Kids grow up so quickly these days. Laptops are traditionally powered by one of three different types of batteries. These are Nickel Cadmium, Nickel Metal Hydride, and the now commonly used Lithium Ion. Fujitsu is now releasing a laptop in Japan that runs on air. Not really, but they are marketing it as such. For every FMV Loox laptop sold in Japan Fujitsu will buy enough green wind energy credits to equal the amount of power the laptop is estimated to use over a four year period. That’s a lot of green.

Fujitsu is estimating that each FMV Loox laptop will be used in the following manner 240 days out of each year for four years:

Actively used 4.5 hours per day
Charged 4.5 hours per day
Turned off for 15 hours per day

This usage equals approximately 45.5 kilowatt hours and releases about 18 kilograms of CO2 into the atmosphere.

This means Fujitsu will purchase an equivalent amount of wind power from Japan Natural Energy Co. So although the laptops themselves will pollute, wind power will be made available for use that otherwise would not be. This theoretically plays out as a zero sum gain in CO2 emissions making the environmental foot print of the FMV Loox tiny to nothing at all. This saving to the environment isn’t free however.

The cost of the wind power credits is being at least to some degree passed on to the consumer. The green laptop will cost the equivalent of $1,155.00, whereas a similar non-green machine would run in the neighborhood of $780.00. So the laptop buyers in Japan that want to help save the environment will have to chip in $375 to do so (about 37k Yen). These are not cheap laptops.

The FMV Loox has the following specifications:

The Intel Atom Processor is currently the smallest processor available with the world’s smallest transistors. The chip also boasts the lowest power usage of any other Intel chip.

Of the Intel chip, Intel Executive Vice President Sean Maloney said, “The Intel® Atom™ processor is based on an entirely new design, built for low power and designed specifically for a new wave of Mobile Internet Devices and simple, low-cost PC's. This small wonder is a fundamental new shift in design, small yet powerful enough to enable a big Internet experience on these new devices.”

With power usage and the environment in mind this was the obvious chip for the job.

The FMV Loox is available only through the Fujitsu web site at this time. No U.S. release has been announced.

Looking at all the various swords for sale online can make you feel a bit like a kid in a candy store. But if you are looking to buy authentic replica swords online, it can be a bit harder to get what you really want than it otherwise might first appearÂ…

Sure, if you are just looking for an ornamental sword to hang on the wall Â– itÂ’s pretty easy. Just look around for a sword that takes your fancy, donÂ’t spend much more than US$50 and your chances of getting what you want are goodÂ…

But if you are like me when I first started my sword collection, you might not know that there is a world of difference between an ornamental sword that you hang on the wall and a REAL sword that you can actually swing through the air or cut things with!

The reality is that the vast majority of swords for sale on the internet are what experienced sword collectors call Â“sword like objectsÂ”. Even just swinging one of these swords through the air is asking for trouble, and may the gods help you if you try to cut something as simple as a cardboard box! More often than not, the swords handle will break, the blade will shatter or worse still, come flying off like some demented helicopter blade at a speed of just over 40mph (trust me, voice of experience here!).

The fact of the matter is that if you are looking for a REAL sword, you need to start your search looking for what online sword sellers refer to as a Â“battle readyÂ” or Â“functional sword.Â”

Unfortunately though, not all sword sellers are scrupulously honest in their description of a battle ready swordÂ… And quite often, this description is applied to swords that are anything but Â“functionalÂ”.

Essentially, there are three main characteristics that all REAL swords have in common. And those characteristics are:

They are made of high carbon steel, NOT stainless steel.

The swords have been properly heat treated to ensure they are not too brittle and not too soft.

The sword has what is called a Â“full tangÂ”. In other words, the metal insert that goes into the swords handle is forged as part of the sword, and not welded on afterwards.

Of course, not all Â“functionalÂ” swords being sold online accurately describe if they have these characteristics. Luckily though, there is a fairly easy way to determine if a sword is REAL or not. And that is by only buying swords made by a well known and respected sword manufacturer.

In my opinion, the best Â“bang for your buckÂ” swords are all produced by 3 companies Â– Windlass Steelcrafts, Generation 2 and Paul Chens Hanwei Forge. All of these manufacturers make good quality REAL swords at prices around the US$150 to $200 mark.

While you might think that this is a lot to pay for a sword, especially when compared to the cheap swords being sold online for $30 or $40 Â– the reality is that you are not comparing apples with apples. And believe me, for this price range you can get some very mean, strong swords that you would be proud to show off to your friends.

Iaido Sword

Iaido is the art of drawing the sword and striking an armed opponent at lightning speed. It is the art of strategy, achieving precision in all aspects of mental and physical ability, including accurate footwork, balanced posture and crititcal timing. Live blades are razor-sharp and experienced practitioners are the only ones permitted to use them. The risk involved is thought to be worthwhile because this is the only way achieve the ultimate in awareness and concentration, and to unify the mind and the body together in total harmony.

Although Iaido may be classed as a separate martial art, it is closely related and complementary to Kendo. Kendo practice requires 2 people fencing each other armed with shinhai (bamboo swords) and wearing armour, whereas Iaido is practised on an individual basis wearing a gi, juban, hakama and obi. Practitioners use a real or an imitation sword, called an iaito. The aim of the exercise is to perform a set of movements (kata), in which the sword is drawn, an imaginary opponent is cut, and then the sword is resheathed. The ultimate purpose of Iaido, however, is to master the ability to overcome the enemy without the sword being drawn in the first place – in other words, to conquer the enemy “spiritually”, with the sword still in the sheath, and so resolve problems without having to even resort to violence. There is one quote that explains this way of thinking: “The mind is not disturbed by the self being beaten up but by the self beating up others.”

History:

Iaido derives from the ancient way of the Samurai warrior (bushi), and the forerunner of the art we know today, Iaijutsu, was used in earnest on the battlefield, whereas Iaido was designed to practise “the way of the sword”.

Evidence suggests that the bokken used today in Iaido has been used as a weapon since around 400 AD. The bokken is a solid wooden stick with the same shape, weight and approximate length as a sword, and is usually made of red or white oak. Bokken technique was followed by the art of tachikaki (drawing the sword from its scabbard). The blade (tachi or katana), was long and straight and the Japanese warrior would carry it on his left side. A shorter blade was used for quick-draw techniques known as batto.

Ha Long Bay is the leading candidate for Seven New Wonders of the World - an amazing, jaw dropping "have to see it to believe it" kind of place. And I had. Seen it. One year earlier, to be exact, while on a business trip and it amazing and my jaw did drop. I wanted S to experience the same thing and I was counting my blessings that I was going to see it again.

Normally we are on a tight, tight backpacker budget that forces us into fan cooled rooms with questionable stains on the walls, the sounds of the noisy street (or beach) keeping us awake. But for this, our one night (well, my second one night) on Ha Long Bay sleeping in a junk boat, for this we decided to splash out a bit. And what a difference that 20 extra dollars can make! The food on my trip last year had been good - a solid good. But this year.....just look.

The first course of lunch. We knew that things were looking good when this plate of humongous shrimp (I like to call'em shramp) were set down in front of us. We peeled these guys and dipped them (who am I trying to kid? I bathed mine...) in the limey, salty peppery mixture you see at the top of this page.

I will let you in on a secret. I like eating squid, octopus and cuttlefish the most when they are purple. I have no idea why. When you place a plate of pale white calamari in front of me my stomach is like "nope" but when I see a piece of tako that is the colour of concord grape juice something in my brain breaks and I become submissive to its charms.

Yes - we are still on lunch! You may recall that I am normally a vegetarian (an ass kickin' food lovin' one) but on this trip I decided to eat fish because frankly, I think they are dicks. The wonderful staff on this boat made us an entirely pescetarian 5-course meal. This was a lovely fish steak smothered in a sort of Vietnamese warm salsa - tomatoes, onions both spring and white, chili and of course, garlic.

Our boat was much nicer than our course backpacker senses were accustomed to. Every thing was dark wood polished to a high sheen - very posh.

We eyed the requisite karaoke machine with suspicion, knowing full well that all of the Da Lat wine and Ha Noi beer was going to loosen us up enough to give it a go. But first, a perfect simple photo of a cold towel in a little laquered basket.

I am really at my very happiest when a meal begins with a vase of jumbo shramp and some carved vegetable flowers. I want every meal to start with these things. Do not be surprised if you come to my house and I present you with a tall refreshing glass of shrimp and a carrot rosette before you're even all the way in the door.

These were in served in a really light broth - mostly clam nectar and garlic and were very delicate and pretty, but....I have had a bad relationship with bivalves since a terrible, horrible, life changing-ly bad bout of food poisoning from mussels a few years ago. Only recently have I been able to even entertain the notion of placing a clam anywhere near my mouth - but these boys made the cut! Cautiously, mind you - I only ate about 5 and even then was terrified to go to sleep, as if they were little clam axe-murderers just waiting for me to relax and close my eyes.
For the grand finale: crab shells stuffed with crab cakes. Just when I was feeling a little riced out, a little accosted with lemongrass (I hate the stuff and am pummeled with it daily) they brought these little gems out. Now, I don't harbour any notions that these are in any way Vietnamese other than the fact that the crab lived here, but let me tell you: I was one pinch of Old Bay Seasoning and a little pot of aioli away from sheer bliss.

I will always remember my first time to Ha Long Bay. I will remember the beauty, the eerie calm, the almost spooky way that the karst rock formations jut out from the murky sea. It was magic in the truest sense of the word.

But my second trip? I will think about those tiny limes, the plump shrimp, the delicate blush of an octopus tentacle, the meatiness of the rich crab meat.

And I'll look you straight in the eye and tell you that the first time was more meaningful.
