History of Hatpins

Hatpins reached a peak of popularity between the 1890s and 1920s, as music hall actresses like Lillian Russell and Lillian Langtry fueled the popularity of large elaborate hats without bonnet strings. Having originated in the 1850s to secure straw hats, hatpins became longer and more ornate over time (1910 was the height of hatpin length, with the stems alone reaching 10 to 12 inches). The mass produced white or black bead on a pin was the basic 'working girl' hatpin, but many high end hatpins were made by jewelers of brass, copper, sterling silver, gold, or gold or silver wash. Other materials included Carnival glass, rhinestones, hand blown molded glass, micro mosaic, or hand painted or transferred porcelain like the Japanese Satsuma. There were also hatpins made with ivory, emeralds, stone, amber, tortoise shell, jet, celluloid and other plastics, mother of pearl, and coral. Key hatpin manufacturers included Unger Brothers, Lincoln, William Kerr, Alvin Manufacturing, R. Blackington and Company, Day and Clarke, and The Sterling Company. Notable hatpin designers included Charles Horner, Louis Tiffany, William Codman, James T. Wooley, Barton Jenks, and George Gebelein. Hatpins spanned many styles including Baroque, Etruscan Revival, Greek Revival, Egyptian Revival, Oriental influence, Arts and Crafts, Art Nouveau and even Art Deco, before waning around WW1 when metals became scarce and hats got smaller. Collectors also seek specialized hatpins, including hallmarked hatpins, hatpins that serve vanities, opera hatpins, and compact hatpins that have a mirror and a powder puff. Amethyst and pearls are popular, as well as Plique-a-Jour enamel. Hatpin holders are also sought after.

Antique Lamps Kakiemon A Story Of Harmony And Balance

Kakiemon, pronounced, Kak-i-eh-mon, is all about balance, a small range of distinctive colors, known as the palette, pure white porcelain and a perfect eye for harmony.

In the world of art and design, colour is important, in fact, of primary importance, with many specific colours bearing the name of their originator. The sublime palette of Kakiemon enamels is a key example.

Kakiemons color range is small, but distinctive, delicate, balanced and in perfect harmony. The palette composed of iron-red, cerulean-blue, turquoise-green, yellow, aubergine and gold, however, it is the iron red aspect of the palette from which our story unfolds

The setting is 16th century Japan, the year 1596 and the founding father of the celebrated dynastic family of Japanese potters, Sakaida Kizaemon, (1596-1666), is born.

Working in the ceramic heartland of Japanese ceramics, Arita Province, it was Kizaemon, who, achieving a range of firsts, opened a new window to the world of ceramic art.

The extremely fine, pure white body, (Nigoshide), is believed to have been exclusive to the Kakiemon kiln and Kizaemon was, unquestionably, not only a master potter, but could see colors that literally, as enamels, did not exist.

Japanese art, with its long history, has always drawn its inspiration from the world of nature, with each changing season offering a new range of colors and ideas. Kakiemon wares are usually painted with natural subjects such as birds in branches, flying squirrels, the quail and millet, grasshoppers, moths and garden insects. Very often seen are the Three Friends of Winter, (pine, prunus, and bamboo), trailing flowers, and banded hedges. The chrysanthemum, the national flower of Japan, is a very common subject.

Human subjects are rare; some have been given titles such as the Woman and the Nightingale and Hob in the Well, a title given by 18th century England! This decoration was based on a popular design derived from the story of a Chinese sage saving his friend who had fallen into a large fishbowl.

It was from the natural world that Sakaida Kizaemon produced his iron red by capturing the delicate red color and texture of the persimmon, (kaki), on porcelain. He is traditionally believed to have introduced over glaze enamelling on porcelain to Japan in the 1640s and in recognition of his dedication and artistic achievements, was awarded the honorific name of Kaki-emon, or, Kakiemon.

Kakiemon porcelains can be typified by -:

a)hexagonal or octagonal shapes

b)An iron-brown dressing, (fuchi-beni), which was applied to the edges of many Kakiemon porcelains to embellish and protect the rims from being chipped.

c)pure white porcelain

d)a colorless glaze

e)widely spaced decoration placed with a perfect eye for harmony and balance.

The Kakiemon family remains porcelain makers and skilled decorators right up to today with only the eldest son inheriting the family name and special skills.

Kakiemon XIII, (1906-1982), was designated as an important cultural treasure of Japan in March 1971 and Kakiemon XIV, born in 1934, the 13th descendant of Sakaida Kakiemon, was designated a Living National Treasure of ceramic decoration in July, 2001.

History is like the tide, with the rise and fall of events and the story of Kakiemon is about to take a rise!

China was the source of all porcelain to the West, with a vast output being exported to Europe. At this time, Japanese porcelain was unknown, let alone the beautiful porcelains from the Kakiemon kilns.

In the early 17th century, Imperial China was in complete political chaos with the turmoil of the closing years of the Ming dynasty. The dynasty completely collapsed in 1644 and the production of export porcelain to the West came to a halt. It would be thirty years later that the production of export porcelain would resume.

The Dutch, at this time, were the great merchant trading sea power, who, with a concession trading port, exported vast amounts of Chinese export porcelain to Europe, all produced at the great kilns of Jingdezhen.

When production stopped, the merchant fleet turned to Japan. The Dutch merchant fleet was the only Western nation allowed to trade there and had their trading port on Deshima Island, in Nagasaki Harbour. Remember, it was at this time that Japan was closed to the West in an effort to contain European influence and it was only from these designated ports that trading could take place.

In fact, the production of Japanese porcelain had only a half a centurys history before the Dutch East Indiamen arrived and it was not long before the Dutch trading fleet, laden with Japanese porcelain, was heading for Holland.

The arrival of the new Japanese porcelain was a revelation, as very little colored porcelain had been seen, with most of the Chinese export having been blue and white wares.

This was Japan's export high peak with virtually no competition. Kakiemon soon became the most prized and certainly the most expensive porcelain in Europe, becoming de rigueur in the princely palaces of Northern Europe, and despite the price, was the style most sought after by the rich and famous!

The sleeping dragon, however, was waking, and Chinas chaos had subsided with the establishment of the Manchu dynasty and the long and productive reign of the Kang Xi Emperor. The great kilns at Jingdezhen were reopened and the thriving business of export porcelain to the West commenced.

Japanese Kakiemon porcelain, with its export to Europe, became the most influential ceramic decoration towards the end of the 17th century; the shapes, the decorative style and exquisite palette were copied by all the most important 18th century European factories, including Meissen, Chantilly, Chelsea, Bow and Worcester.

Kakiemon continued to influence European decoration throughout the 18th and into the 19th century and is still being reproduced by the most famous porcelain makers today.

Hand made 3 foot owl made of wood slats with metal trim and leather ears, signed by Bob Timberlake.? I have this three foot tall hand made owl, signed by Bob Timberlake. It was from the old May Co. department stores from back when they sold Bob Timberlake furniture. Any idea if this was made by Bob Timberlake, or was just consigned and later signed by Bob? And is it worth saving or selling? A Google Image search resulted in the link below. If in fact all that is shown is from the same Bob Timberlake he seems to be mostly known for furniture. But has dabbled in painting and textiles .However with a second search for websites ,link below, he seems to be quite an industry. But I didn't see any owls as far as I looked. Discover How a Crawl Space Dehumidifier Can Protect your Home From Wood Rot

Humidity and moisture in your crawl space can often lead to a serious problem for homeowners not using a crawl space dehumidifier; wood rot. Wood rot, also called wood decay, is caused by microscopic organisms that belong to the fungi group. These organisms are what cause the wood to actually decay.

Wood is comprised of 3 major components: cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. Wood rots because the fungi "eat" these 3 major components of wood cells by releasing enzymes that digest wood cells.

Wood that has a moisture content of 20% or above is very susceptible to rotting. The attacking fungi require 4 conditions for colonization:

1) Adequate oxygen supply

2) Temperature range between 40-100 degrees Fahrenheit

3) Constant moisture source

4) Adequate supply of food (wood)

Untreated moisture damage can cause a decrease in your property value by 10% to 15% according to the National Association of Waterproofing and Structural Repair Contractors (NAWSRC).

Catching moisture problems like wood rot in the early stages will save you both money and headaches. There are several warning signs to alert you that moisture may be damaging your home: excessive condensation on windows, blistering or peeling paint, discolored wood surfaces, splits across the wood grain, mold spots, musty odors and standing water in your crawl space.

If you notice any of these warning signs, you need to determine where the moisture is coming from. Check for plumbing leaks, roof leaks, debris filled gutter and downspouts, foundation cracks and poorly graded soil that drains towards your home. In your crawlspace, look for mold stains on the foundation walls and/or puddled water.

Moist, humid air from your crawlspace increases the moisture content of the wood in your home, making it vulnerable to wood rot. By installing a vapor barrier and a high grade crawl space dehumidifier, you can protect the value of your home.

Wildwood Lamps – Today’s Treasure, Tomorrow’s Heirloom

Wildwood Lamps sets the standard for excellence in decorative lighting for the home or office.  Designers draw inspiration from lovely Japanese Kutani porcelain, elegant German and Florentine lead crystal, beautiful Italian toleware, and fine American artware. Encompassing Traditional, Transitional, Contemporary, and Modern styles, the Wildwood collection includes over four thousand table lamps, floor lamps, chandeliers, and other interior décor accessories.  In addition, lamps are available in numerous materials such as hand-decorated porcelain and ceramic, lead crystal, pure brass, solid bronze, several types of iron, wood, glass, chrome, and natural fiber. History of Wildwood

In 1900, Mr. W. Bulluck founded a retail store in the small southern town of Rocky Mount, North Carolina.  Although the store prospered, Mr. Bulluck turned the store over to his son-in-law, Hatcher Kincheloe, during the depression.  In the early 1960’s, Bill Kincheloe, grandson of Mr. Bulluck, became manager of the store. At the time, lamps and lampshades were only one component of the retail business.  At the request of his customers, Bill Kincheloe began developing a process to make customized lamps and lampshades.

By 1969, the retail store was producing a limited quantity of fine hand-crafted lamps using “in-house” wooden pieces and other components from importers. One day a furniture representative remarked that he could “sell” those lamps. The rep was given the line, photographs were taken, and Wildwood was launched.

In the early years, Wildwood Lamps focused on creating beautiful, classically inspired, European masterpieces.  Later, Transitional, Contemporary, and Modern styles and sub-styles such as Coastal, Casual, Southwest were introduced.  By 2000, to reach a growing number of consumers, the company began to expand the line to include a greater number of styles at more moderate prices.  Wildwood called this line of lamps “Marketplace.”  These lamps still maintained the attention to design and detail expected from a Wildwood lamp.

Today, Wildwood Lamps offers an extensive selection of the fine table lamps, floor lamps, desk lamps, buffet lamps, chandeliers, limited pieces of occasional furniture, and interior décor accessories. The company maintains both the Wildwood and the Marketplace line of lamps which allows customers choices in terms of the level of investment.
