How can I get wrinkles out of my new silk drapes? Just hung my new drapes but they have fold lines from the packaging. Is there a way to steam them w/a home iron, or do I need to have the cleaners press them or buy a hand steamer? Help! I would just iron them on a medium heat setting with a press cloth between the fabric and the iron. Silk is not a delicate fabric like everyone seems to believe. I regularly wash silk blouses in the washer and dryer and iron them afterwards. They still look great. If you steam the drapes, you might get water spots, which will show up on silk even when dry. Dry cleaners are a waste of money. After they steam them, they will fold them! lol

Suits and Silk Ties the English Way

CMT is an abbreviation for, “cut, made and trimmed”, which was used often as described in a clothing industry that once flourished across England. Commonly known as the rag trade, it has suffered many low blows over the past couple of decades, but never gone down for the count. But this is specific to mass production. On the other hand the bespoke industry and CMT are the gathering storm, soon to challenge the conveyor belts on many fronts.

Savile Row has played a major role helping the industry’s survivors, like local silk weavers, CMT and tie manufacturers. The bespoke market is directly driven by demand and therefore sustainable, with little impact on our environment.

If you’re looking for value, there is always something new and exciting, but not easy to find. “Made in England” individuality and originality need not cost a fortune, so if your budget is a little tight, don’t be concerned, because there are brand names that cater to your needs, at the right price.

One prime example is Timothy Everest, a long time emerging Savile Row tailor. His designer silk ties (Spitalfield Flower) impress upon you the conservatism expected of Savile Row, but with a unique originality, affordable luxury best describes Timothy’s ties, made in England with the Savile Row stamp of approval, all this for £45.00.

But if you’re looking for a bespoke suit by the same name, then dig deep, for a few thousand pounds. Remember he dresses David Beckham.

Don’t forget where the first dark suit originated, Brummell rejected 18th century frills (dandy man). His mandate, a dark blue coat, buff-coloured pantaloons and waistcoat, black boots and a clean white neck cloth, survives today as the dark business suit, white shirt and silk tie

He was particularly adamant about the whiteness of his cravats. As he made his daily rounds from the park, various gentleman's clubs and fashionable homes, Brummell would stop and change his cravat as often as three times a day. He preferred neck cloths that were lightly starched and carefully folded.

The simplicity of Brummell's uniform was adopted by everyone from many working men to his friend, the Prince Regent, later King George IV. For the first time, poorer men hoping to make their way in the world could easily imitate upper class fashion.

Moving slightly away from the conservative tone of Savile Row, and across the Thames River to Battersea, we take a look at Ian Flaherty, a man of substantial artistic talent. Already renowned world wide for his vibrant cufflink designs, he uses pure English Pewter, Swarovski Crystals and brilliant enamels.

His designer silk ties strike a similar chord; they reflect Ian’s artistry through colour arrangement and symmetry. Slightly more expensive than Timothy Everest at £59.00, all his designs are produced in limited quantities and handmade in London. They’re sure to give many years good knottage.

Now while we’re on the subject of ties, did you know? That in 1880, the rowing club at Oxford Universities Exeter College, invented the first school ties. After an emotional win over their rivals, they celebrated by removing their ribbon hat bands from their boater hats and tying them, four in hand around their necks.

When they ordered a set of ties, with the colours from their hatbands, they had accidentally created the modern school tie. Schools, clubs, and athletic ties appeared in abundance. Some schools had different ties for various grades, levels of achievement, and for graduates. Thanks to historians and their method of accurate documentation all the original college colours are still available from archived samples and replicate ties can be made to order.

Now, to a more unlikely candidate: Vivienne Westwood. She has ventured down every avenue from designing evening gowns to crockery for Wedgwood. Three times winner of “fashion designer of the year” and awarded DBE in 2006 for her contribution to the fashion industry. Vivienne’s fashion accessories for men are original without being garish novelties. In August her spring summer collection will be on display. The big surprise is her cufflinks, they’re as refreshing as a cool breeze on a hot summer’s day. Vivienne has garnered much respect over the years.

And as autumn wanes, fashion completes another seasonal cycle. And we wait in great anticipation for new styles freshly watered down from the catwalks. New designers emerge while others fade. And so another turbulent season approaches. Buyers have to keep their wits alert, fashion rises and falls as quickly as the tide. For commercial buyers, developing a theme is as important as selecting the appropriate brand names and styles. The theme, “made in England” it goes against the grain as more and more brands head east to reduce production costs. But as sure as fashion completes another cycle then customers will see the light and demand a return to home grown qualities.

Closing anecdote: 1858: Henry Poole earns the first of his Royal Warrants from the newly crowned Emperor Napoleon III of France to whom Poole and Baron de Rothschild advanced £10,000 to stage a coup in France to establish The Second Empire. How to Play an Outfielder in Baseball

When looking at the entire spectrum of a game, you will want to make sure that every player knows their place and what they need to do. This isn't just important for the pitcher and batter, but also for those that aren't as near to the infield. One of the people that are important in order to make the game complete is the outfielder. Their ability to be prepared and approach the ball effectively is what will help to make a complete game. 

Like shortstops, outfielders will need to see the overall situation and know how to respond to it. This is especially important when they are moving the ball into the infield. If another player isn't ready to respond to them, it will allow the other team to stay a step ahead. Whether the outfielder is in right, left or center field, they will need to have the ability to put the ball back where it belongs in the game. 

Before beginning to communicate or see where the ball needs to go, an outfielder should be prepared for the play to happen. The outfielders should all be in a pre-pitch stance when a play is about to happen. Usually, this means that the outfielders will be slightly bent with their hands on their knees. This allows them to be ready to watch the ball, move to where the ball is going, and jump if needed in order to catch the ball. With this stance, the weight should be on the balls of the outfielder's feet in order to give more momentum when they go to catch the ball.

After you are in ready stance, you will need to be sure to continue to stay prepared until you have the ability to catch the ball. The first three steps that you take will help you to get the momentum that you need in order to speed up the jump that you are able to take. After this momentum is built, you will want to stay behind the ball and anticipate where you will be able to catch it. When you are teaching the catch, make sure that outfielders are able to do this with both hands, and then are able to throw quickly after the catch to the necessary place. 

Playing as an outfielder will be an important part of every game. It allows the ball and the game to stay in the field and to stay in the right area. Even though these players are not around as much pressure in the infield, it is just as important for them to keep open communication and to be ready to play ball.

According to a report the Commissioner of Japanese Baseball has told Bud Selig that he's open to making ->? A World Series between the Champion of the Japanese League Vs the Champion of MLB before Bud Selig leaves in 2012. . Your thoughts? Would you like that or not & why? I don't like it. It presents a lot of problems, like travel, turf/dome vs. grass/outdoors, it will either put the NPB vs MLB series into November or shorten the MLB season. The ball that NPB uses is very different than the ball that MLB uses. The Strike zone is also different. NPB has had recent financial troubles with some teams folding/merging and their teams don't generate the revenue that most MLB teams do, nor do they have the travel budget that USA teams do. NPB is only 6 years removed from a strike. Time zone issues would also cut into the television revenue... most people wouldn't get up at 5 Am to watch a baseball game if they don't have a horse in the race and delaying the game would be pointless in the age of the internet b/c you could just get the box score online. Nope... the Major League Baseball Japan All Star series is fine enough for me... which is a lopsided 45-19 in favor of MLB. My guess is that this is just NPB's commissioner talking up his sport, it will not happen. I doubt he is even serious, suppose there a "world series" what would happen to public image in the world baseball community if NPB teams lost frequently to MLB teams? Would that be good for NPB? Clearly not, they are better off talking about a head to head competition, but not actually having it, they would get smoked by the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, Phillies, Cardinals... NPB is not as bad as AAA and not as good as MLB and in a lot of ways very different. Cute idea tho. Edit: that is not true about the Japanese fields being 100 feet smaller, not even close they are mostly basically 70s style cookie cutter fixed dome stadiums... Tokyo Dome is 400 to Cf and 328 down the lines and houses two teams, Koshien Stadium one of the only fields with real dirt instead of slid pits is pretty much the same in dimensions... NPB has far fewer HRs than MLB. Edit 2: Jenn, yes NPB has players from the Dominican and from the USA, and from all over the world for that matter, they are like the USA in that the majority of the players are from the nation, but they have others... now do most Dominicans want to play in NPB over MLB, clearly not, that is where the difference is, MLB is viewed as more elite in the eyes of the world there is better talent and prestige and you get paid more and its much less expensive to live in the USA than Tokyo.

International Baseball - the World Baseball Classic Comes This March

The World Baseball Classic is an international baseball tournament that is sanctioned by the International Baseball Federation and showcases the best players in the world representing their home countries and territories. It started in March of 2006 when 486 players with 235 of them coming from teams in Major League Baseball representing 16 teams from across the globe entered the event. Fans from 48 states and 15 countries attended the stadiums to watch the games while millions more watched on TV ensuring that the tournament was a success.

The Japanese team which was bannered by the likes of Japanese stars and now MLB stars Suzuki Ichiro of the Seattle Mariners and Daisuke Matzusaka of the Boston Red Sox was crowned the first ever World Baseball Classic champions as they beat Cuba 10-6 during the  inaugural staging of the event in 2006.  This year, the tournament starts on the 5th of March up to the 23rd and again shall feature 16 baseball playing nations across the globe.  The tournament shall be held every four years afterwards with plans to expand the number of participating teams in 2013. Four different cities shall host the pool play which are Tokyo, Mexico City, San Juan and Toronto.

Teams participating in the event are the same teams which were entered in the inaugural season. These are Australia, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, Panama, Puerto Rico, South Africa, United States and Venezuela.  Team Japan are out to defend their title and win the crown once again.  And the team's roster got a boost when its star outfielder Ichiro agreed to return to the side. He could have easily refused to go back as he was included in the championship winning team but he wanted to return and win the classic all over again. With one of its stars having such a mindset, Team Japan is upbeat that the other stars shall follow.

The tournament was also a launching pad for one of the Japanese pitchers. Matzusaka was still an unknown name in the baseball world outside his native country. But when he put up a performance worthy of a Most Valuable Player Award as he pitched to defeat Cuba, he was immediately noticed by scouts. Nine months later, he signed a six year contract with the Boston Red Sox after fierce competition among the top MLB teams for his services. He has since posted a record of 33-15 in the two seasons he has played for the Red Sox. He can be a factor once again in Team Japan's bid for back to back titles.

No roster spots have been filled officially, although several players have expressed their desire to join the team. Matzusaka for one, has not made a formal commitment yet but has confirmed to Japanese reporters numerous times that he wants to participate again.  A notable absentee in Team Japan's line up is Hideki Matsui who is still undergoing rehabilitation for his knee injuries.
